Racing pocket bikes, also known as Mini GP racing or Minimoto racing, is a type of racing using miniature versions of full size motorcycles, called pocket bikes. Pocket bikes racing takes place on dirt tracks. It is a very popular form of racing in Europe and Japan, and is increasing in popularity all over the world, in particular in North America.
The usual pocket bike is about a quarter the size of a regular motorbike, and has an internal combustion engine of between 40-50 cubic centimetres producing between three and fifteen horse power, which varies with the exact model. There is no suspension on a pocket bike but they rely instead on bumps being absorbed by the tires. Most weigh in the region of thirty five pounds. Models for newcomers will usually output about 3 to 4 horsepower, but the more expensive racing models run with much more power. The best pocket bikes for racing have a very favorable weight to power ratio. Performance enhancements are sometimes added to increase speed and acceleration. In spite of their small size, both children and adults can reach speeds of at least 55 mph in organized racing leagues.
Because they are small pocket bikes are easy to transport, and the cost of the bikes is low which adds to their appeal to both adults and children. The least expensive pocket bikes from China sell for as low as $200 for a basic model, while you could pay as much as as $4000 for a top pocket bike from Italy. Children from around six can be taught the motorcycle racing while adults are able to feel all the thrills of bike racing without the huge costs and danger involved in regular full size motorcycle racing.
